Nourishing during the Holidays

It's that time of year again, when we are surrounded by lots of family and friends ~ LOVE! as well as decadent food everywhere ~ less love. We constantly have to decide what to eat, how much, and make healthy choices for several weeks to prevent the infamous holiday weight gain and imbalance from over-consumption. Here's a few of my tactics to survive during the holidays:
  • Gratefulness for my healthy, strong and balanced mind, body and spirit
  • Savoring every bite; eating slowly, using smaller plates & utensils
  • Eating several small meals daily; never starving myself all day before a feast
  • Beginning with a salad/soup or sensible appetizer
  • Drinking many of glasses of water during the day ~ hydration!
  • Portioning my plate in quarters; lean protein, complex carbohydrates (vegetables), grains, and starchy/other food
  • Recording in a food diary/spreadsheet; food intake for a few days per month to 'check' my caloric, macro & micro nutrient intake
  • Cooking with lots of herbs and spices for flavor and health benefits
  • Being active ~ getting daily physical and mental exercise
  • Breathing deeply and taking a time-out to rest, sleep, and simply be
  • Appreciating all that I do for myself, others and the world
